Official Observers...There To Help

The "Official Observers" are often misunderstood. They are a dedicated group of "hams" who give of their time and experience to help our great hobby. OO's have no enforcement powers. They send helpful notices to fellow amateurs when they deem it necessary. They can and do provide the FCC with evidence (tape recordings etc.) to support investigations in serious cases. Most (should be all) OO's use common sense and are not "nit-pickers". They also send notices recognizing good operating. So don't believe everything you hear regarding the Official Observer program. Do you think you would like to become an OO? Click here to read a short intro. to the OO program from ARRL. It's not for everyone but you may be the one to join over 700 other dedicated OO's in the 50 states. If you are really interested contact your respective Section Manager (SM) for more detailed information and requirements. He/She will be happy to discuss the appointment with you. If you don't know who your SM is ask around or check the listing in the first few pages of QST magazine. With todays influx of new hams and crowded frequencies on some bands, more OO's are needed. I was an OO in the 50's and 60's and still am today. OO's are the Amateur Radio Auxiliary of the F.C.C. 73.

"EchoLink" by Jonathan Taylor, K1RFD, is a useful and fun mode of communicating. I've used it since January (2005), and although it's not a daily activity in my case, it is enjoyable. All you need is the "EchoLink" software, a computer and any old microphone. I use a cheap Radio Shack mike here. Some use the one built into their webcams. I use the strictly Internet method. You can also link your rig to the system, either simplex or through a repeater.

MY FIRST RIG....1953

Although this photo is of W5VID's first rig, it is identical to mine as a Novice in July of 1953. I built it and my best DX on 80 was Georgia. My power supply looked different,(it was on a metal chassis) but the transmitter is the same "Sucker Stick" rig.......73, K2DYB.
P.S., 2nd Rig was a Heathkit AT-1 and 3rd was a Heathkit DX-40. Then a used Collins 32-V3. Receivers were a National NC-57B, then a Hammarlund HQ-110 and finally a Hammarlund HQ-170C.
